Hazmat drill held in Virginia Beach neighborhood

Simulated leak will pose no danger

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A hazardous materials drill is being held in a Virginia Beach neighborhood Wednesday morning.

The city is staging an incident from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Ocean Lakes area, with the goal of testing its emergency response systems.

According to a news release from the City Manger’s Office, the drill will include a simulated accident involving a car and a tanker at Firefall and Schumann drives, near Ocean Lakes High School. Because it is a drill, the tanker will not be filled with hazardous materials or chemicals, but rather water. Officials say if anything is leaking from the tanker, it is simply water, and will not be a danger to anyone nearby.

Local fire, police, rescue crews and schools will be involved in the exercise, in addition to the Hampton Roads Sanitation District. Organizers say traffic is not expected to be impacted.

If you notice the simulated incident going on Wednesday, officials say there is no need to call “911.”
