YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office is warning York County residents about a scam involving a request for donations.

According to a post on their Facebook page, an unknown caller contacted a York County resident and told them they had recent passed a deputy’s vehicle that was conducting a traffic stop, and said they had failed to move over to the left. The caller also said the Sheriff’s Office gives warnings for a first time offense, but they would like a $75 donation.

According to the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, deputies do not contact citizens and request donations. Deputies may call about investigations, but they will also provide their rank, name and a contact number associated with the office.

That number can be verified by contacting the office’s communications center at 757-890-3621.
