PD: Armed men rob manager, employee at cyber café

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.  (WAVY) – “They need to be off the street,” Newport News Detective Allison Erickson said. “They are dangerous.”

Under the cover of nightfall, Newport News police say three men pulled off a brazen robbery. It happened early Saturday, around 4 a.m., at the Newport News Computer Services Cyber Café along Stoney Creek Lane.

Police say a manager and another employee had closed up for the night and were leaving out a back exit when they were forced back inside at gunpoint.

“Three males went to approach them as they went to get in their vehicle at the end of their shift,” Erickson said. “They got in their vehicle, the males approached and then forced them back in the business.”

The group went back inside, where surveillance cameras were rolling. Police hope the video holds the key to finding the robbers.

“At a glance, it might look like we don’t have a whole lot to work with,” Erickson said. “One of the suspects in particular has a bit more of a unique build. He is heavy set male. You can see him walking in the video at one point, and somebody might recognize his build, the way he walks.”

The three suspects — all who had guns — went over to the register and grabbed what they could. They left out the backdoor, but what they didn’t know was that one of the employees also had a gun.

“As they fled, shots were fired between one of the employees and the suspect,” Erickson said.

Not one was hit, but the thieves did get away. Police hope they won’t be on the loose for long so no one else gets hurt.

“Three males coming in a business like that in the middle of the night exchanging gunfire, somebody could have been killed,” Erickson said.
