NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Two Newport News men are in police custody after an investigation into a mother’s claims that they sexually assaulted her daughter.
On May 30, the mother told police that two men known to her family had sexually assaulted her 13-year-old daughter, according to Holly McPherson with the Newport News Police Department.
The teen girl had related to her mother that the men had assaulted her on separate occasions this year. She identified the suspects as Courtney Lamar Crenshaw and Melvin Samuel Hicks, Jr.
A detective with the department’s Special Victims Unit investigated the claims and obtained warrants on June 9 for 38-year-old Hicks and 31-year-old Crenshaw.
Hicks was already being held in the Newport News City Jail on unrelated charges, so on June 12, he was served with three counts carnal knowledge, three counts indecent liberties and one count of attempted rape.
Crenshaw was arrested Wednesday at his girlfriend’s residence and charged with object sexual penetration and aggravated sexual battery. He was also served an outstanding warrant for destruction of property.
