JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Police arrested 28-year-old Benjamin Lewis for an attempted purse snatching in James City County.

Police say they responded to a call July 24 just after 9 p.m. at the Monticello Marketplace Shopping Center.

The investigation revealed a 52-year-old woman was walking in the parking lot towards Target when Lewis approached her from behind and grabbed her purse. The woman, on her cell phone at the time, pulled back and screamed as the purse straps broke and spilled the purse’s contents on the ground. Lewis ran away, only to be chased down and confronted by witnesses. A struggle broke out, but a Target employee and a store customer were able to get Lewis to the ground and hold him down until police arrived.

Lewis was charged with attempted larceny, two counts of assault and battery and drunk in public.

Police say he is being held in the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail without bond.
