JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – Officers had to rush to help a fellow correctional officer getting choked by an inmate, the James City County Police Department confirms.
According to Deputy Chief Steve Rubino, 29-year-old William Burks, Jr., an inmate at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail, got into a dispute with the officer on July 19 over his dinner tray. Burks tried swinging the tray at the office, bit the officer on the hand, then put his arm around his neck and started choking him. That’s when other officers broke it up, Rubino said.
The officer was not seriously hurt.
Police arrested Burks on July 24 on new felony charges of assault and battery on a corrections officer and maiming and strangulation.
