NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A plane leaving Chambers Field at Naval Station Norfolk had to return Friday morning after hitting a bird.
Terri Davis, a spokesperson for Naval Station Norfolk, told WAVY News a flight headed to Jacksonville, Fla. hit a bird just after takeoff around 6:40 a.m. Davis said the right engine was damaged, and the plane had to return to Chambers Field.
After landing with a full load and on one engine, Davis said the aircraft had hot brakes. The fire department responded and stayed on hand until the brakes cooled.
Davis said the aircraft was grounded, and the flight was delayed for 24 hours. Accommodations were arranged for people who were traveling on orders.
