CHERITON, Va. (WAVY) – Parts of the Eastern Shore woke up Friday to downed trees and damage after a deadly tornado.
WAVY News’ Lex Gray is in Cheriton, where people began returning to Cherrystone Campground around 8 a.m. Heavy machinery, equipment and supplies were also going through the entrance. Campers are expected to be allowed back in all morning.
In addition to the campers, there are people who live in that same area year-round who are dealing with cleanup.
The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office says some campers were allowed back Thursday, but the damage is so bad that not everyone was able to go.
For those who could not get to their personal belongings, hotels around Northampton County took them in for the night. Donations were coming into Northampton High School, where many people were taken Thursday for shelter.
Governor Terry McAuliffe announced Thursday he was making his way back to Virginia to visit the Eastern Shore. He plans to visit the campsite Friday, see damage and meet with people who were impacted.
