NJ couple killed in Eastern Shore tornado

Husband Lord Balabat and wife Lolabeth Ortega were killed at Cherrystone Campground when an EF-1 tornado ripped across the Eastern Shore Thursday, July 24, 2014. Their 13-year-old son was severely injured.

CHERITON, Va. (WAVY) – Two people were killed Thursday when a tornado struck Cherrystone Campground in Cheriton, Va.

Corinne Geller with the Virginia State Police said the husband and wife, both 38 years old, are from New Jersey. Troopers identified them as Lord Balatbat and Lolibeth Ortega.

Their three children are in the hospital after Thursday’s storm. Their 13-year-old son was taken by helicopter to Children’s Hospital of the King’s daughters with serious injuries.

Balatbat’s father spoke with reporters at a New Jersey newspaper. He said he and his wife want to get to CHKD, but neither of them are well enough, themselves, to make the trip.
