Mother faces charges after children found alone in car

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A Newport News mother is facing neglect charges after her children were found alone in a parked car.

Officers were called to the Wal-Mart located at 6111 Jefferson Ave. Thursday around 2:45 p.m. about three children who had been left unattended in a vehicle.

According to the Newport News Police Department, officers found a two-year-old girl, a four-year-old boy, and a nine-year-old boy in the backseat of a car, alone, with a rear window partially down and the door unlocked.

Officers were told the children may have been in the vehicle for about 20 minutes before they arrived.

Police said the mother of the children, identified as 30-year-old Shirlean Whichard, returned to the car. She was arrested and charged with three counts of child neglect.

According to police, Child Protective Services was contacted and the children were released to their father.
