NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton Roads Transit received a $4.4 million grant to replace an Elizabeth River ferry and make additional improvements to the ferry system.
According to a news release, HRT is now able to replace two existing ferries, with the help of an additional grant awarded in 2012. All boats are expected to be in active service for special events that draw more customers.
“This is wonderful news for us and our customers,” William Harrell, president and CEO of Hampton Roads Transit, said in the news release. “Replacing older equipment with new and more modern boats will ensure continued excellent service for years to come.”
The release states between $2 and $3 million will go towards the new ferry, while the rest of the grant will be spent on dock repairs, including improvements to help disabled persons.
It also says HRT is expected to be awarded a contract for proposals in 2015.
