Danielle Rivera was inside a camper at the Cherrystone Campground in Cheriton, Va. Thursday morning when a tornado hit. Danielle grabbed her camera and started recording video of the huge hail that was falling only to then see the unexpected damage that followed. “I was thinking I was done, that this was going to be the end of my vacation,” Danielle explained, recounting the fear she felt during the storm.
Danielle spoke to WAVY News 10 live during our Midday newscast Thursday. The 17-year-old said she was terrified, but she and her mother decided to stay in the camper, rather than seek other shelter. “At the time it was the safest choice to stay inside the camper because of the hail that was coming down. It was just ridiculous, the size of these hail balls were ginormous. Me and my mom thought stay in the camper until it calms down then go to the car because the car is, you know, the safest thing.”
Danielle and her family have been going to the Cherrystone Campground for the past ten years. She said this was the worst experience she’s ever had in her life.
