NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A day after a woman and child were found dead inside a home in Norfolk, police have ruled their deaths a filicide and suicide. A filicide is when a parent kills their own child.

Police were called to the 400 block of Woodford Road around 2:40 p.m. Wednesday and discovered the bodies of 43-year-old Karla Mihok and her 8-year-old daughter. The investigation revealed they both died from gunshot wounds, according to Officer Daniel Hudson.

A family member reportedly came home and made the tragic discovery. There was a feeling of sadness up and down the street, as neighbors saw all the police activity and learned what happened.

“I’m sitting here looking at this house, and I know these people,” said neighbor Samantha Jordyn. “The girls sold me Girl Scout cookies, they come and play with the dogs, they run around and they are always in the yard. The woman is always chatty and very friendly.”

“She was a special needs child,” Jordyn said. “She was very sweet and giggly. [She] use to walk up and down with her dog.”

WAVY.com was told another child was not at home at the time of the crime.

Police spent hours talking to neighbors and collecting evidence. At one point, they even towed away a car, but were clear to say Wednesday that they were not looking for any suspects.

The case remains under investigation.
