OUTER BANKS, N.C. (WAVY) — A loud boom heard off the coast of the Outer Banks Tuesday night is related to Navy training exercises, according to Navy officials.

Around 9:30 p.m., the WAVY Newsroom started hearing reports of the boom being heard and felt from Nags Head to Duck.

Lt. Hodgins with Navy Fleet Forces confirmed to WAVY.com the loud noise was caused by F-18s doing training off the coast at the Navy’s Dare County Bombing Range.

Coast Guard officials told WAVY.com they contacted all boats in the area and none reported any kind of problem.

The Kill Devil Hills Fire Department told WAVY.com the noise was not related to a natural gas leak that occurred around the same time.

No further information has been released.
