Surry boater search

SURRY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – Details are emerging Tuesday following a boating accident on the James River over the weekend.

Laurie Naismith with the Virginia Marine Resources Commission says Kenneth Leary and Therese Digby left Chicahomney Haven and were headed to the Pork, Peanut and Pine Festival in Surry County. Digby told investigators she fell off the boat about 40 minutes after leaving.

She was found around 7:30 a.m. Saturday holding onto an old piling by the Surry Ferry landing. Officials said she was intoxicated, and she was taken to Obici Hospital.

The next day, a boat washed ashore in the area of Swan Point Road. Leary’s phone and wallet were found on the boat. According to a report by Marine Police Chief Investigating Officer D.E. Bond, Leary had been the operator of the boat.

Leary’s body was found near the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry dock around 7:30 p.m. Sunday by someone on a jet ski. His body was identified Monday through fingerprints.
