SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — City officials confirm a commercial structure fire in Downtown Suffolk Tuesday night.

The fire happened in the 1100 block of Holland Road at Amadis Industries, a company that produces peanut harvesting machinery, according to Diana Klink with the city of Suffolk.

A 911 call came in to emergency dispatchers around 10:30 p.m. about smoke in the duct work at the business.

“Upon preliminary investigation, it was determined that a hopper approximately 4’ by 5’ full of metal shavings in a plasma cutter was actively on fire,” Klink said.

Employees had used extinguishing equipment before firefighters arrived to contain the fire. Only light smoke was showing in the manufacturing area, when crews got there.

Klink said all 24 employees on the night shift evacuated safely.

The fire has been extinguished and Amadas staff are disassembling the affected equipment, Klink said.
