ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) — A man has been charged with 15 offenses after he led Elizabeth City police on a high-speed chase early Sunday morning.

Around 2:15 a.m., an officer saw a Gray Mercury Marquis speed, make an abrupt turn and then run a red light, according to Captain John D. Young with the Elizabeth City Police Department. The officer turned on his emergency lights and siren and began following the vehicle, in an attempt to pull it over.

At the stop light at Church Street and Hughes Boulevard, the vehicle drove into oncoming traffic to avoid the stop light.

“Due to the amount of cars and the impending safety to other drivers near the Church Street intersection, the officer slowed his response to await oncoming traffic to clear and lost sight of the vehicle, which was estimated to be traveling at 90+ mph,” Young said.

Two other officers were alerted and positioned themselves in the area of NU Quality Ice Cream. Young said that at the same time the suspect vehicle changed his direction several times and increased his speed to try to elude police.

The pursuit continued and the vehicle slowed to about 60 mph because of what appeared to be a mechanical failure, Young said. The chase led the suspect and officers out of town, and seemed come to an end near the intersection of North Side Road when the vehicle lost control and crashed into a ditch.

As officers were approaching the vehicle on foot, the suspect vehicle accelerated, crashed into two police cruisers, and almost hit an officer before continuing down North Side Road.

Young said police followed the suspect to a dead end on Tift Lane, where the vehicle went off the roadway and into a backyard. The vehicle came to a stop, the driver engaged an officer before fleeing on foot.

At 7 p.m. Sunday, the suspect, identified as Antone Tremaine Whidbee, turned himself in to the Elizabeth City Police Department. He was charged with the following:

  • 2 Felony Counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with the Intent to Kill
  • 2 Counts of Injury to Personal Property
  • 2 Counts of Hit and Run
  • 1 Felony Count of Speeding to Elude Arrest

  • 1 Count of Expired Vehicle Registration
  • 1 Count of Transporting an open container of Spirituous Liquor
  • 1 Count of Operating a vehicle with no Currant Inspection
