ODU student’s body comes home from Peru this week

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A Virginia Beach family is one step closer to having their deceased son brought home from Peru.

19-year-old Damian Deshawn Wilkins was a rising junior at Old Dominion University. He was in a jungle in Peru for a pre-med internship when he had a heart attack last week, and died.

Wilkins’ mother, Richell Dabney, called WAVY News 10 when she ran into red tape trying to get her son’s body home.

Dabney said Damian is now at a funeral home in Lima, Peru. She said all the paperwork is in order, and the family has authorization from the Peruvian government. After troubles finding an airline that would carry her son, she now knows he will be back in Hampton Roads Thursday evening.

Wilkins funeral will be held Monday, July 28 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
