PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Portsmouth firefighters rescued seven people from an apartment fire at London Oaks Apartments early Saturday morning.

Fire crews responded to the 1100 block of Virginia Avenue for reports of a kitchen fire in an apartment.

Firefighters were on scene within minutes of receiving the call and rescued seven people from a window in the apartment using ladders, according to a Fire Department spokesman. Medics took one person to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The fire was contained to one apartment in the eight unit building and only the apartment that fire started in was uninhabitable. The Red Cross was not requested for assistance.
