Two in custody after shots fired into Hampton businesses

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton police have made two arrests after businesses were shot at Thursday afternoon.

Around 1:15 p.m., officers responded to the 800 block of LaSalle Avenue after multiple 911 callers reported shots fired into two businesses, according to the Hampton Police Division.

Upon arrival, officers learned Adams Pawn Shop and Lift Jesus Higher Ministries had been hit by gunfire in the Queens Plaza shopping center. A nearby occupied residence was also hit.

Descriptions of the suspects were sent out to officers in the area, and two suspects were located. Police say an extensive foot pursuit took place and ended with both of the suspects being taken into custody.

So far, an investigation into the incident indicates there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspects and an unknown victim. No one was injured during the incident.

Hampton residents Kemar R. White, 24, and Calvin J. Schofield, 22, were both charged with the following in relation to the shooting: two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling, one count shooting across a roadway, one count discharging a firearm in a public place, and one count conspiracy to commit a felony.

White and Schofield are being held at the Hampton City Jail. Police say their mugshots are being withheld, pending the on-going investigation.
