York Co. deputies say bank caught a scam on Care.com

YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Deputies in York County say a resident looking for a job almost became victim to a scam on a popular caregiver website.

The resident uploaded her resume to Care.com, which claims to be the world’s largest online destination for care. Visitors can either look for a caregiver or post a resume and profile, seeking a job as a caregiver.

The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office said the victim was contacted by a male, who said he wanted to employ her to care for his mother. So, he sent the victim a check for $2,500 and told her $50 was for a processing fee and $400 was her first weeks’ pay. The rest, he said, would be delivered to a Realtor, who was purchasing a house for his mother, and would be contacting her in the near future.

The victim went to a bank and attempted to cash the check. Fortunately, the bank was familiar with the scam and did not cash the check.

No further information has been released about this incident.
