Times for Downtown Tunnel closures change

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Elizabeth River Tunnels has changed the schedule for closures at the westbound Downtown Tunnel over the next couple weeks. Work on the eastbound tube will also begin soon.

The regular nighttime closures of I-264 West at the Downtown Tunnel from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. will continue from Wednesday, July 16 through Thursday, July 24. The only difference in closure times will be on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 18-20. The tunnel will close from 8 p.m. each night until 8 a.m. the following morning.

Single lane closures for the Downtown Tunnel headed East begin the week of July 20, with full weekend closures starting Friday, July 25.

According to ERT, the single lane closures will allow crews to relocate conduit, wiring and radio antennas preparing for more extensive work later this year.

ERT said single lane eastbound closures may occur from 8 p.m. each night until 5 a.m. the following morning, and may continue each day through the fall. Full closures of the eastbound Downtown Tunnel will begin at 8 p.m. on Fridays, and reopen at 5 a.m. on Mondays, except for holidays and weekend events.
