CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Police say an 80-year-old man is in critical condition after he was injured during a robbery in his own garage Wednesday evening.
Officers responded to the 500 block of Longdale Crest for a report of an assault around 5:30 p.m., according to Kelly O’Sulivan with Chesapeake police.
Upon arrival at the scene, police found a man in his garage suffering from injuries to his head. The victim was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries. Thursday, O’Sullivan said the man was in critical condition.
“We don’t need that stuff to happen here,“ said neighbor Ray Whitehurst. “It’s discouraging, because we are not used to having stuff like that in here. I‘ve been here 25 years and that’s the first time anything like that ever happened.”
The victim told police he grabbed a hammer during the struggle and hit the suspect in the head, and also bit his thumb.
“Were they desperate from money or was it just a mean act?” asked neighbor Bonnie Wilson. “You wonder what you would do, because as you get older, you get weaker. You’re now not as strong as a younger person. It’s scary.”
The suspect was described as a black male, about 18 to 25 years old, 5’7″ tall, weighing 170 pounds. He was wearing a camouflage shirt, camouflage pants, a fishing-type camouflage hat and Nike Lebron 9 shoes that were white with black and purple.
Police said the suspect should have an injury to his head and thumb. He fled the area on a bike with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The case remains under investigation.
