SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Suffolk police responded to a crash involving a dump truck and an empty flat-bed truck Monday afternoon.
The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of Portsmouth Boulevard (Route 58), between the Landfill and the Weigh Scales, according to Diana Klink with Suffolk police.
When the two trucks collided, the large, tractor-trailer type dump truck landed in a ditch, resting on its side. The truck was hauling scrap auto parts.
“Due to the issue regarding a combination of diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid and engine oil spilling into the ditch, crews from Suffolk Fire & Rescue dammed the ditch to prevent the flow of liquids and a hazardous materials firm will be assisting further with clean-up,” Klink said.
The whole situation caused officials to close all eastbound lanes of Route 58 at the scene of the crash. Officials reopened one lane relatively quickly, but traffic moved very slowly for hours. All lanes were reopened at 9:35 p.m.
No one was injured, and the cause of the crash is under investigation, Klink said.
