Man hit by train in Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) – An investigation continues into the death of a man hit by a train in Williamsburg early Monday morning.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia State Police said troopers were contacted by the Williamsburg Police Departmentaround 1:15 a.m. to investigate the incident on Richmond Road at the Bypass Bridge.

Investigators learned crew members of CSX Railroad saw a person lying motionless on the tracks as the train signaled and approached. Anaya said the train was unable to stop in time, and ran over the person.

The victim, identified as 42-year-old Raymond Lee Galownia, died at the scene. Troopers are working with CSX Railroad Police and the Medical Examiner’s office will determine his cause of death.

Anaya said the train was hauling 100 empty coal hoppers westbound back to Fulton Yard in Richmond City.
