Fire sparks at vacant Newport News house

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A fire sparked Monday at a vacant house in Newport News.

Crews were called to the scene in the 600 block of 35th Street just before 5 a.m. Fire officials said units arrived and saw smoke coming from the roof of the single-family structure, which was boarded up and vacant.

Battalion Chief J. Douglas Carper with the Newport news Fire Department said crews had the flames under control in about 10 minutes. No one was hurt.

Dispatchers told WAVY News 10 part of Jefferson Avenue at 35th Street was closed to traffic while crews responded.

The Fire Marshal’s Office is now investigating the cause of the fire.
