NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A large police scene formed in the Denbigh area of Newport News Friday afternoon, after a detective saw someone shooting a car with a CO2 gun.

Holly McPherson with Newport News Police said the detective was in the 100 block of Beechmont Drive, near Devol Drive, when he saw a 17-year-old male shooting at a vehicle driving down the road.

Officers were dispatched to the scene around 3:45 p.m. McPherson said it turned out the teen knew the people inside the vehicle, and that he was “pranking them.”

The incident caused minor damage to the vehicle, and the teen was arrested on charges of shooting at an occupied vehicle, discharging a firearm within 300 feet of a highway, and brandishing a firearm, McPherson said.

He is currently being held in the Newport News Detention Center.
