Driver charged with DUI after fatal I-64 crash

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A man has died after Virginia State Police say a drunk driver crashed into his vehicle on Interstate 64 Thursday night.

Just after 8 p.m., dispatchers got a 911 call about a disabled 1998 Honda Civic with the flashers activated that was stopped in the left shoulder lane of I-64 East, just west of the Twin Bridges.

The driver, Tyler A. Carnes, had contacted AAA and was waiting for assistance when police say Robert G. Horton drove a 2001 Ford Explorer off the road and into his vehicle.

When Troopers arrived, they found Carnes trapped inside his vehicle with life-threatening injuries, Sergeant Michelle Anaya said. The 21-year-old was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he later passed away.

Horton, a 47-year-old from Norfolk, escaped the crash with minor injuries. He was charged with driving under the influence, 2nd offense, and taken to Virginia Beach City Jail, where he received a $1500 secured bond, Anaya said.

The case will be presented to the Commonwealth’s Attorney to determine if further charges will be filed.
