HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A 65-year-old woman was gunned down at her home in Hampton Thursday evening.
Just after 6:30 p.m., officers responded to the 300 block of Shawen Drive for a complaint about an unconscious woman, according to Sgt. Jason Price with the Hampton Police Division. Upon arrival, officers found the woman outside her home with a gunshot wound.
Katherine Ann Fleming was transported to a local hospital and pronounced deceased at 7:17 p.m., Price said.
The investigation revealed she was outside her home when she was shot.
Neighbors told 10 On Your Side they ran outside to help when they saw Flemming lying in the yard.
“I did 15 years in the Army, I’m a combat disabled vet,” said Damon Chatterton. “It’s just automatic reaction for me to do the right thing no matter what.”
Unfortunately, their attempts at CPR were not enough. None of them knew Fleming well, but they say they will never forget her now.
They are concerned that this happened on their quiet street, but Price told WAVY.com, “We are following up on several leads currently. It’s a very active investigation, and we are very confident in saying the citizens who live here in the neighborhood are not in any further fear of any additional violent crimes.”
