SMITHFIELD, Va. (WAVY) – The man Smithfield Police say stabbed another man at the Smithfield Packing Plant was arraigned in court Monday.
According to Lt. Matthew Rogers with Smithfield Police Department,officers were dispatched to the plant around 1:45 a.m. July 10 for a report of a stabbing. Two employees got into an altercation inside the plant, during which one person was stabbed several times in the back with a pair of scissors.
The 45-year-old victim was transported to Riverside Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The suspect, Yunior Ramon Torres-Ortiz of Newport News, was apprehended by police before 6 a.m. after receiving treatment in Newport News. He has been charged with aggravated malicious wounding.
The plant was on lockdown for a brief period of time while police investigated, but returned to normal operations early Thursday morning.
Torres-Ortiz will be back in court July 17 for a bond hearing.
