HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – The Hampton Health Department is warning residents about a confirmed case of rabies in the Edinburgh Farms/Howe Farms area, off Harris Creek Road.
According to the city’s Health Department, a family dog came into contact with the raccoon on July 6 in that area.
The raccoon was sent to the State Laboratory in Richmond, where it tested positive for rabies.
The Health Department said the dog that came into contact with the raccoon was current on its rabies shot, so it will receive a booster shot and be observed for 45 days at the owner’s home.
Hampton’s Environmental Health Manager is urging residents to make sure their pets have current shots, and says they should not feed or make contact with wild animals.
If you see a sickly animal, call Hampton City Animal Control at 757-727-6111.
