SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – An injured bear was tranquilized and removed from a tree in Suffolk Wednesday.

Diana Klink with the City of Suffolk said they first started getting calls about a bear sighting in the 6000 block of Old College Drive around 7:30 a.m. Klink said there were actually two bears in the area, one of which was a cub.

One of the bears made its way into a wooded area, but Klink said emergency operators started getting calls around 11 a.m. about another bear in a tree along Bradford Drive in the College Square neighborhood. The bear was believed to have been somehow injured.

An Animal Control officer, several Suffolk Police officers and two Department of Game & Inland Fisheries biologists responded and determined it was best to tranquilize the bear to get it out of the tree.

The bear, a young male, was removed around 2 p.m. It is now in the care of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
