Suspect charged in barricade situation

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – Police have taken a man into custody after a barricade situation in Chesapeake during the overnight hours Tuesday.

Officer Leo Kosinski with the Chesapeake Police Department told WAVY.com officers received a call around 11:30 p.m. Monday for a report of what police called a “disturbed individual” at the Studios and Suites 4 Less on Battlefield Boulevard.

The man was reportedly barricaded alone inside a room with some type of weapon and was threatening to hurt himself, Kosinksi said.

It took several hours before the man finally surrendered to police just before 5:30 a.m. It was later learned the man was not armed.

He has been identified as Alan Lawson, 38, of Newport News. He was charged with resisting arrest, simple assault/threats to law enforcement officer and damaged property.

Kelly O’Sullivan with the Chesapeake Police Department said he also had outstanding warrants for failure to appear to court – resisting arrest and damaged property.
