DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) – Money is on the way to the Outer Banks to help protect the dunes.

The Army Corps of Engineers awarded a contract worth more than $20 million to an Illinois-based company, to help protect beaches north of Rodanthe on Hatteras Island. This area sees beach erosion whenever major storms hit.

Crews will dredge sand from a sandbar in the Atlantic. The first dredge is scheduled to begin next week.

This work could impact traffic. To help make things smoother, NCDOT is considering two bridge alternatives along NC 12 to help people get around.

The project could be complete by mid-September.
