Man dies after being hit by SUV in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A man died early Saturday morning after police say he was struck by an SUV on Jefferson Avenue while walking in the middle of the road.

Police responded to 12978 Jefferson Ave. just before 2:30 a.m. after receiving reports that a SUV struck a pedestrian, according to police. When officers arrived in the area, they found a man lying in the middle of the road with life-threatening injuries. The man died a short time later at the scene.

He has been identified as 32-year-old David Barraza Palacio of Newport News.

According to a press release from Newport News Police, the preliminary investigation indicates the victim was walking southbound on Jefferson Avenue in the middle of road when a Ford Explorer driven by a 41-year-old Newport News woman hit him.

The area of Jefferson Avenue where the accident happened is not well lit, according to the release.

The accident is being investigated by the police department’s Complex Accident Team. Holly McPherson with the Newport News Police Department said alcohol was a factor for Palacio.

No charges are pending against the driver.
