NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A teenage girl is facing robbery and conspiracy charges, and police are looking for two other suspects after a man was robbed.

Holly McPherson with the Newport News Police Department said around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, a 26-year-old man flagged down officers and told them he had been robbed. The victim told police he had been communicating with a girl through a social network site for a few months, and arranged to meet her at his apartment.

McPherson said the female, a 16-year-old girl, arrived at the apartment with another girl. A short time later, the front door opened and a male came into the apartment, brandishing a handgun at the victim. Police said the victim was ordered to the ground, while the 16-year-old girl took his wallet, jewelry and cell phone.

The suspects then fled, leaving the victim on the floor.

Detectives charged a 16-year-old girl with robbery and conspiracy in connection to the investigation, and she was placed in Juvenile Detention custody.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the two other unidentified suspects to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

When it comes to meeting people via social network sites, Newport News Police advise you to be mindful of the following guidelines:

• Get to know the other person before disclosing detailed personal information or meeting them in person.
• Always meet for the first time in a populated, public location – never in a private location, and never at your date’s home or apartment.
• It is best not to go back to your date’s home or bring them back to yours on the first date.
