Child dies after being hit by vehicle in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Police say a child has died after being hit by a vehicle in Newport News Wednesday evening.

The crash happened in the 2800 block of Wickham Avenue around 5:45 p.m. Nightingale was dispatched to the scene and transported the boy to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Lou Thurston with Newport News police said the two-year-old boy was hit by a black SUV outside a community center and across the street from his home. The female driver stayed at the scene and told police she didn’t see the child.

Thurston said witnesses told police the child was on the porch of his house. He somehow got off the porch and wandered into the street. Police are investigating whether the child had adult supervision.

As of now, police say there is no evidence the driver was speeding. No charges have been filed against the driver, at this time.

Holly McPherson with the Newport News Police Department said the boy was pronounced dead at 10 p.m. Thursday.
