Deputies: Mom found unconscious as child wandered alone

YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – A 31-year-old woman is facing a slew of charges after deputies say her child was found wandering alone on a roadway.

Mike Russell with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office told WAVY.com deputies were dispatched to the area of Hampton Highway and Victory Boulevard June 26 for a report of a 5-year-old wandering alone in the median.

Deputies found the child’s mother in a vehicle nearby. Russell said she was unconscious and there were apparent signs of drug use.

The mother, identified as Heather Venable, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of schedule V controlled substance, possession of schedule IV controlled substance, possess, distribute controlled paraphernalia and abuse and neglect of children.

Child Protective Services took custody of the child.
