NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A 25-year-old Newport News man who pleaded guilty to gang-related charges will spend the rest of the his life in prison.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Kevin L. Ashby received that sentence for his part in a May 2009 murder. He got another 40 years for being part of the “Thug Relations” gang, which engaged in narcotics distribution, weapons violations and multiple acts of violence in Newport News, including several murders.
According to court documents, the gang operates in the Aqueduct Apartments, St. Michael’s Apartments, Mariner’s Landing Apartments, Heritage Trace Apartments and in the Warwick Lawns, Warwick Town Home, Sharon Drive and Savage Drive areas of the city.
In March, Ashby admitted to participating in the murders of Andre Horton and Andre Julius Johnson on May 17, 2009, the murder and robbery of Lafayette Bailey on Dec. 15, 2009, and the murder and robbery of Lloyd Robinson on Jan. 8, 2010.
Ashby’s co-defendent Antonio Fuller is expected to go on trial on July 1.
