NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Two people were killed in a crash along Interstate 64 in Newport News Wednesday night.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya with Virginia State Police said the single-vehicle crash happened around 9:15 p.m. in the westbound lanes near mile marker 250 when a 1998 BMW ran off the road and struck a tree.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and the front seat passenger was removed from the car and airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The passenger later died of her injuries and has been identified as Lashawan Lashell Hogans, 21, of Newport News.
The driver has been identified as Lamar Yasin Parker, 22, of Newport News.
All westbound traffic was initially stopped at mile marker 253, near Denbigh Boulevard, according to Susan Clizbe with the Virginia Department of Transportation. Traffic was being diverted off I-64 West at Jefferson Avenue, Exit 255B.
The crash remains under investigation at this time and troopers are working to determine if speed and/or alcohol were factors.
