SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Suffolk man was charged with assaulting a police officer who responded to a public disturbance call Tuesday afternoon.
Around 3:30 p.m., an officer was dispatched to the 200 block of North 5th Street for a report of a disturbance, according to Diana Klink with Suffolk police. The caller said a drunk person was trying to fight residents at a home there.
The suspect, 59-year-old Alton Vernell Savage, of Suffolk initially resisted arrest and threatened to fight officers, Klink said. He approached an officer and kicked the officer’s leg.
Savage was taken into custody, transported to Sentara Obici Hospital for medical evaluation and then to Western Tidewater Regional Jail. There he was arrested on charges of public intoxication and assaulting a law enforcement officer, Klink said.
