HATTERAS, N.C. (WAVY) – A 49-year-old Fredericksburg man was killed when a tunnel he was digging in the sand on Hatteras Island collapsed Monday.
The accident happened around 2:40 p.m. south of Salvo, Cyndy Holda with the Cape Hatteras National Seashore told WAVY.com. David Frasier was working to connect two very large and deep holes with a sand tunnel when it collapsed, covering him with about five to six feet of sand.
Emergency crews arrived on scene as Frasier was being pulled from the sand by family, friends and bystanders. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
