HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton rescue crews were called to help kayakers near the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel late Monday night.
Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Pereira with the Hampton Fire-Rescue Division said a boat in distress call came in just before 11 p.m. in the area between the HRBT and the Chamberlain Hotel.
Fire units were dispatched, as well as Hampton Boat 2.
An investigation revealed two boaters, each in a kayak, were in the area when one fell out and needed assistance. Hampton Boat 2 arrived and rescued the boater around 11:30 p.m. and the other boater made it back to shore on his own.
Pereira said the boater in the water was wearing a life preserver and had a whistle to alert rescue crews of his location. There were also people on shore helping to point out the kayakers location.
The boater who made it to shore was in his 30s. Pereira said he was assessed by medics. The other was in his 40s and was transported to a local hospital for observation.
Pereira said both were conscious and alert.
