CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — The driver of the vehicle a woman fell from on the Gilmerton Bridge Tuesday has been charged with DUI.
Around 6:20 p.m. Chesapeake police responded to the west side of the Gilmerton Bridge for a report of a 49-year-old woman who fell from a 1999 Oldsmobile, according to Detective Boykin with the Chesapeake Police Department. At the scene, officers were told the woman was a passenger in the vehicle and climbed out of the sunroof as the vehicle was traveling west across the bridge.
The driver told police an unsuccessful attempt was made to pull her back inside. Then she turned around on the roof, facing the back of the vehicle, lost her balance and fell onto the roadway, Boykin said.
The woman was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries.
The driver, identified as Kimberly Coleman, 39, of Chesapeake, was arrested and charged with DUI and driving on a suspended license, Kelly O’Sullivan with the Chesapeake Police Department said.
Boykin said the speed of the vehicle, how long the woman was on top of the vehicle’s roof, and the reason she was riding there are not known, at this time.
