NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Officers from several local police departments will strap on cleats and shinguards this weekend and compete in a law enforcement soccer tournament to honor fallen Officer Brian Jones.
The Norfolk Police Department lost Officer Jones to the hands of a gunman Saturday, May 31st. He left behind a wife and three young children, and now the department’s soccer team is organizing the tournament to help raise money to support them.
The event will take place this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Powhatan Field in Norfolk.
There will be t-shirt and sticker sales, raffles of goods donated by local businesses, and concessions. A portion of the money raised will be donated to Officer Jones family.
The following is a tentative schedule of the day’s events:
- 8:45 AM Opening Ceremony
- 9:00 AM Newport News PD vs Virginia Beach PD
- 10:00 AM Norfolk PD vs Hampton PD/FD
- 11:00 AM Newport News PD vs Norfolk PD
- 12:00 PM Virginia Beach PD vs Hampton PD/FD
- 1:00 PM Hampton PD/FD vs Newport News PD
- 2:00 PM Norfolk PD vs Virginia Beach PD
- 3:00 PM Raffles
- 3:30 PM Tournament Final
- 4:30 PM Closing Ceremony
Matches will be played in two 25 minute halves with 5 minutes at halftime and 5 minutes at the end of each match. Teams receive 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, 0 points for a loss. The two teams with the most points at the end of round play will play in the final.
