SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A bear was spotted up a tree in a Suffolk neighborhood Saturday night.

Diana Klink with the City of Suffolk said calls started coming in to Suffolk Emergency Communications around 8 p.m. about a bear near Holland Road/Route 58 near Grove Avenue.

Officials said the bear climbed a tree in the 100 block of Deborah Drive. Suffolk Police and the Game Warden, with the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, are on the scene.

Klink said the bear is estimated to be about 2 years old, weighing between 100 and 150 pounds. The Game Warden is waiting for a crowd to disperse so that the bear will come down on its own.

Last month, Suffolk residents reported more bear sightings. At the time, Klink said it is not uncommon to see a bear in the area because the Great Dismal Swamp is nearby.
