Sailboat captain medevaced by Coast Guard

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The Coast Guard medevaced the 68-year-old captain of the sailboat Bad Cat Friday due to a skin infection.

According to a release from 5th District Public Affairs, Coast Guard 5th District Command Center watchstanders were contacted by a crewman aboard the 37-foot sailboat at approximately 12:24 p.m. to report the captain’s medical emergency.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and an HC-130 Hercules airplane crew launched from Coast Guard Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina to assist.

The aircrews arrived at the scene, 127 miles east of Virginia Beach, at approximately 2:15 p.m. The captain was brought aboard the helicopter and transferred to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital personnel about an hour later.

At this time WAVY does not have additional information regarding the captain’s condition.
