Citizen alerts police to possible burglary in progress

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – An 18-year-old man has been charged in several burglary investigations as well as an assault.

Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department told WAVY.com officers responded to the area of Beech Drive around 9 a.m. May 22 for a report of a possible burglary in progress. Officers responding found three young males matching the description given by the caller.

The three males were taken into custody and questioned. The investigation revealed Marcus Sedgwick of Newport News as well as a 13-year-old and a 15-year-old were took a bicycle from the Colonial Courts Hotel along Jefferson Avenue and tried to break into three homes on Beech Drive and Hemlock Road, Thurston said.

Sedgwick was charged with two counts attempted burglary, burglary, three counts attempted grand larceny, petit larceny, six counts contributing to the delinquency of a minor and two counts of conspiracy to commit a felony. The two juveniles are facing the same charges with the exception of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Additionally, Thurston said Sedgwick was identified as a suspect in an assault that occurred June 10. The 33-year-old victim told police he was assaulted by several young males around 8 p.m. and then the next morning found windows of his vehicle broken out as well as other damage.

Warrants for misdemeanor assault and damage to property were obtained for Sedgwick.
