NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) –  Norfolk residents can expect an emergency test call on Thursday, June 26.

City spokeswoman Lori Crouch said in a news release, the city is partnering with Verizon to test its public safety emergency call capabilities. The Nixle Emergency Alert System will call every land-line phone in the city with a pre-recorded message, begining at 2 p.m.

Norfolk officials are testing to measure the time it takes to distribute a public safety message, and the results will be incorporated into the city’s Emergency Readiness Plan.

In a real emergency, the program can target a specific area or the entire city with a life safety message, as needed.
