Coast Guard rescues two after fishing boat sinks off Eastern Shore

CAPE CHARLES, Va. (WAVY) – The Coast Guard rescued two men after a fishing boat sank two miles off Kiptopeke State Park in Cape Charles early Sunday morning.

According to a Coast Guard spokesman, around 3:25 a.m. Eduardo Montalvo swam to shore and called 911 after the fishing boat he was on with two others sank.

A response boat from Coast Guard Station Cape Charles and a rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Elizabeth City responded and began searching the area.

A second fisherman, Bonatacio Montalvo,64, also managed to swim to shore around 4 a.m. and was taken by helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment of hypothermia.

The rescue helicopter returned to the area and located the third fisherman, 27-year-old Jose Rosales, two miles off the coast and hoisted him to safety.

All three men suffered symptoms of hypothermia, but only two were taken to the hospital. The first fisherman who swam to shore and called for help refused medical treatment. No other injuries were reported.

All three men were wearing life-jackets.
